Dr Subrato Bhattacharyya enjoyed his birth date on July 22, 1939. After completing B.Sc. in 1955, he obtained BDS degree from Calcutta University with honors in 1959. After completing BDS, he joined Nair Hospital Dental College as a postgraduate student of Oral Pathology and Bacteriology and completed in 1962. He was subsequently awarded Fellowship of the International College of Dentists, USA. Immediately after returning to India, he was appointed as Civil Assistant Surgeon in January 1963 at SMS Medical College (Dental Wing), Jaipur. The BDS. course in Rajasthan was started at the Dental Wing, SMS Medical College, Jaipur, in 1983 with 15 admissions to the course. As a pioneer, he was very passionately involved in developing the Department of Oral Pathology right from day 1 of joining the institution at Jaipur. He has rendered continuous 33 years of his selfless service, succeeding rung after rung from lecturers post to heading the department as a persuasive, resilient, ardent leader till 1995.
Dr. S. Bhattacharyya's experience at the SMS Medical College – Dental Wing, Jaipur, is worth knowing. He had very limited equipment, instruments and no slides, with no technician to support the teaching–learning activities. He managed the department despite these limitations. He developed the skills to describe oral diseases and lesions using blackboard till the authorities provided the required equipment. Bearing the tests of time, he successfully established the first formal Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at the Government SMS College, Jaipur.
He was a President of Jaipur State Branch of Indian Dental Association (IDA) and subsequently as a President of Rajasthan State Branch of IDA. He held the prestigious post of Member of the Dental Council of India. After completing his tenure of Government service, he was invited to shoulder yet another major responsibility of establishing the Dental College and Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Oral Histology at the Farooqia Dental College, Mysuru, Karnataka, from April 1995 till 2009. He was a Member Board of Studies for the University of Rohtak, Haryana, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka, to name a few. He has been invited to several universities as external examiners for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He has been a Teacher of Teachers for the many Oral Pathologists in India.
After serving for a long tenure of 14 years at Mysuru, he rendered his constructive services from May 2009 to December 2019 as Principal and Professor and Head of Oral Pathology at Kantipur Dental College, Kathmandu, Nepal. Once again, based on his experience and devotion to the field of Oral Pathology, he successfully developed the institution and specifically started the first postgraduate course in Oral Pathology in Nepal. The department is now successfully providing the opportunity to the Dental students of Nepal.
He has inculcated in many of the young teachers the essence of teaching Oral Pathology, and above all his unpretentiousness has taught many to become worthy teachers. The credit of this delicateness at this age of 80 years is due to his sheer interest in dentistry and more so in Oral Pathology. His simplicity, approachability, good nature and humble behavior have kept him fit and forthcoming with no major health problems and active life. He also owes a great deal to his better half, his spouse Mrs. Bhattacharyya in accomplishing his dreams in life.
After reaching the pinnacle of his service of 55 rich years, he has now decided to spend his time and attention on the younger generation – his grandchildren at home. He has gracefully accepted the change and is happily living in Jaipur with his family completing 80 committed, successful and peaceful life.
