It is said, “Our achievements are shaped by the strength of the foundations we set.” However, less is said about the foundation being refactored to achieve greater heights. It is this character of Dr. Hemavathy which puts her in a different league. She has been an excellent student, pivoted her career to teaching in the early days and to leadership in the later days. These pivots have made Dr. Hemavathy a leader par excellence in the field of Oral Pathology.

She has taken multiple accolades both for academics and the co-curricular, which on hind sight shows the budding leader in the making. She took dentistry in 1975 in Government Dental College, Bangalore University, and excelled throughout the course. She was appointed by the Karnataka Public Service Commission as a Lecturer in 1981 in the Department of Oral Pathology, Government Dental College, and later was deputed by the Government to do her Master's in Oral Pathology in College of Dental Surgery, Manipal, Mangalore University, in 1986.

Being her postgraduate (PG) student, I remember the massive experience she had gained in the field of Oral Pathology that led students (like me) to be perplexed with the detail she would weave in front of us on any topic we wanted to discuss with her. She would help us take up any topic, provide the deep and engaged guidance to ensure we are able to comprehend the area and at the same time learn it independently, a character that I always cherished as a student and enjoy emulating her as a teacher. It provided us the value of being independent researchers. Just this mentorship character of hers has created a plethora of researchers among her students who are leading their Oral Pathology careers. A teacher would always like to see her students walk that path laid by her, and Dr. Hemavathy has seen many and still sees them deepening and widening the path for more to carve.

While she has been an academician par excellence, she has stacked up astounding administration and leadership skills during her tenure. She has been a member of Board of Studies for undergraduates and PGs for both Bangalore University and later for Rajiv Gandhi University. To RGUHS, she has contributed by being a member of curriculum development, member of faculty of dentistry, member of Academic Council and member of research committee/PhD registration committees. She is one of the founder members of IAOMP and has decorated roles as EC member and Vice President and now in the Advisory Committee. She has several National and International publications to her credit and has taken active roles in research activities and has mentored PhD studies.

Mam, Thank you for your commitment to Excellence in the field of Oral Pathology. This commitment has changed the way we look at the subject and we are now promoters of Oral Pathology and walking the path set by you.
