It is my honor and privilege to write about Dr. Ravindra Mohan Mathur, popularly known as Dr. R M Mathur, who was my teacher and mentor during the early days of my career first as a dental surgeon and then as an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist.

Dr. R M Mathur was born on February 16, 1941, at Pilibhit, a town in the northern part of Uttar Pradesh (UP). He completed his BDS and MDS (Periodontics) from Dental College, King George's Medical College (KGMC), Lucknow, in 1964 and 1966, respectively. In 1970, he was awarded the Common Wealth Scholarship to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom, where he completed his MSc (Oral Pathology) from the Institute of Dental Sciences, Eastman Dental Hospital, London, under the University of London, where he had a chance to learn Oral Pathology from the stalwarts of the subject.

On his return to India, he joined his Alma-Mater (KGMC) as a Lecturer and started developing the Department of Oral Pathology. Gradually, he was promoted to the posts of Reader and Professor and worked for 34 years. He retired from KGMC as a Professor and Head, Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Dental Radiology. His philosophy is that Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology are two faces of the same coin and cannot be separated from each other. Perusing this philosophy, he was instrumental in starting clinical posting of BDS 3rd-year students in Oral Diagnosis Clinic, at King George's Medical University. For his service to the institution, he was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award by KGMC, Lucknow.

In 2001, he joined Saraswati Dental College, Lucknow, as a founder Principal and Head of Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology. He superannuated from the same institution. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Asian Journal of Oral Health and Allied Sciences, Online ISSN: 2331-4393 and Print ISSN: 2331-4385. For his services to the institution, he was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award by Saraswati Group of Institutions, Lucknow.

Dr. Mathur has been an active member of IAOMP since the initial days of association, when it was known as Indian Academy of Oral Pathologists. He went on to serve as the President of the Association from 1998 to 1999. He has also organized the VII (1997) and XVI (2007) National Conference of IAOMP, at Lucknow and Khajuraho, respectively. During his term as the President of IAOMP, he instituted an award for best article published in the Journal of IAOMP to promote scientific writing among the fraternity members.

Dr. R M Mathur also served the Indian Dental Association as the President, UP State branch, and was instrumental in organizing the 40th IDA Conference at Lucknow in 1985. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Oral Pathologists of in 2014, during a CME organized at KGMU.

Dr. R M Mathur has more than 48 years of teaching experience and has around 35 publications to his credit. He was honored by the Minister of Medical Education and Principal, KGMC, Lucknow, as the “Best Teacher of KGMC, Lucknow” in 1991. Further, he was honored by the Governor of UP with Bharat Jyoti Award as the “Doctor of the Year” in 1996. In the same year, he was also awarded by Oral Cancer Society of India for contribution toward the diagnosis and management of oral precancer and cancer.

Dr. Mathur has been honored with three fellowships, one each from Pierre Fachuard Academy, Academy of Dentistry International, and International College of Dentists, respectively.

Dr. Mathur is currently working as Director, HRD, at Saraswati group of Institutions and is also maintaining a private practice since the last more than 50 years by the name of Mathur Dental Clinic.

Dr. R M Mathur Sir will always remain an inspiration to young dental graduates and postgraduates.
