Prof. (Dr.) R R Paul, popularly known as Paul sir, in our fraternity was born in June 1950. After out-standing performance at school leaving Higher Secondary level, he was the first National Scholar to join R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital (RADC&H), Kolkata, as a BDS student in 1970.

His performance at the BDS level was exemplary. He stood first in his batch of BDS course of studies under the University of Calcutta and was awarded State Merit Scholarship.

After completion of BDS course of studies in 1974, he was the first dental graduate from Eastern India to join MDS in Oral Pathology at Nair Hospital Dental College, Bombay, and was groomed efficiently under the guidance of Prof (Dr.) H M Dholakia, Prof. (Dr.) AP Bhatt and Prof. (Dr.) M V Lele. He passed the MDS (Oral Pathology) examination in 1979 with flying colors by topping the merit list under the University of Bombay.

Following this, he came back to Calcutta as a full-time faculty in the Department of Oral Pathology, RADC&H, and in due course, he became the Head of the Department. He was instrumental in introducing MDS course of studies in the specialty of Oral Pathology at RADC&H in 1991.

He served the Department of Oral Pathology for a long-continued period of >25 years and thereafter took voluntary retirement and joined the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology as a Professor and Head at Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences and Research (GNIDSR), Kolkata. He was also instrumental in introducing MDS course of studies too at GNIDSR. Thereafter, he became the Principal of this institute and served till June 2015. Following this, he was elevated to the post of Deputy Director cum In-Charge (Research and Development) of GNIDSR, Kolkata.

Not only in academics, but he was also equally active in the professional organizational level with proven leadership quality. He was a member of Dental Council of India and is well known for his vibrant participation and contribution in the council's activity.

He was equally active in Indian dental association (IDA) activities both at state and at the Head Office (HO). He is the past President and Secretary of IDA, West Bengal State Branch, and was an active CC member (HO) too. He has also served the University of Calcutta as a member of the Post Graduate Faculty Council in Medicine.

He is one of the founder members of our Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (IAOMP) and the first editor of our journal. He is the past President of our association and presently, actively involved as an advisor too. He is a proficient orator and has delivered prestigious Dr. H M Dholakia, Dr. Viswanathan and Sir Nilratan Sircar Memorial orations.

He is a very vibrant academician cum active teacher. He has got more than 50 research publications in National and International peer-reviewed journals. He is a co-author of a book on quantitative diagnostic medicine published from IIT, Kharagpur.

He was awarded the Ph. D. degree by the University of Calcutta for his extensive research in the field of Oral Sub-mucous Fibrosis. He was also awarded the prestigious “Coates Medal” by this University because of his outstanding work in the field of Oral Precancer and Cancer.

He has the unique distinction of being appointed as Ph.D. Guide at School of Medicine and Technology, IIT, Kharagpur, and The West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

Recently, he has joined the Department of Oral and Dental Sciences (A Unit of Fundamental and Applied Research) as Professor and Head at JIS University, Kolkata, and with his initiative, the Ph.D. program (in Oral and Dental Sciences) has been introduced in 2017 under the same University.

Last but not the least, his clinical and diagnostic ability is also praiseworthy. He is one of the leading practitioners in the field of Dentistry in the city of Kolkata.

Finally, Paul sir is blessed by his only son who is a budding cardio-thoracic surgeon in Mumbai.
