Dear friends,

Heartiest new year greetings.

Awareness of the normal value is vital for the diagnosis of the abnormal. It is regrettable that we do not have any normal reference values for many dental findings such as eruption, shedding, dimensions of teeth, and dental arch, and the like, for our population. In practice, we refer to the values of the western population and compare ourselves with them, who are different from us racially, genetically, and environmentally.

Time and again, I have stressed the need for recording the incidence and behavioural pattern of diseases in Indian population. Having crossed one hundred crore, India has one sixth of the global population. Conducting a large scale epidemiological survey involving the entire country by an individual is difficult, if not impossible. Organisations like IDA or IAOMFP can initiate conduction of such studies with the help of senior faculty members as investigators or can allot topics to reputed post graduate institutions region-wise and can provide them with necessary technical expertise and financial assistance. These organizations can also retrieve the available data from the hospitals, clinics, and medical /dental institutions for creation of a central pool with reference to the incidence, behaviour, and management of oral diseases, which can serve as ready reference for further research aiming at prevention and management.

With warm regards
